    Our Story

    A committed, independent French family brand, since 1950.

    It all began in 1950, when Paul Berthomé teamed up with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the very first baby cleansing milk. Not only did they create a technical innovation, they also created a new way to free up parents' time.

    70 years and many millions of soft-skinned babies later, our ambition is still the same: to help parents and make their lives easier with our natural cosmetics brands.

    1950

    Paul Berthomé teamed up with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the first cleansing milk specifically for babies' skin. A technical innovation, but also a new way of freeing up parents' time.

    1977

    The company began to produce its own plant-based active ingredients (extracts, distillates, oils, butters, powders) using green technologies that respect people and the environment: molecular distillation and biotechnology.

    1982

    The Mustela Foundation was created to support research and development projects on childhood and parenthood throughout the world.

    2004

    Jean-Paul Berthomé, son of the founder, signs the United Nations Global Compact, a pioneering commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

    2012

    Mustela has published an unprecedented worldwide study in the British Journal of Dermatology. It paved the way for important discoveries about the immaturity of the skin barrier in children under the age of 2 and the 4 skin types we inherit at birth.

    2018

    Mustela obtains B Corp certification, a pioneering label awarded to companies whose aim is not to be ‘the best in the world’ but ‘the best FOR the world’.

    2019

    At the UN Climate Change Conference, Mustela made a commitment to help achieve global climate targets by 2050.

    Since 1957, 95% of our products have been manufactured at our Epernon site in Eur-et-Loire, France.

    Since 1957, we have ensured that we control our value chain from A to Z: from research to production and marketing. The aim of our strategy is to better control the safety and quality of our products.

    An independent family business

    Mustela is still a family business: it belongs to the family of Paul Berthomé, the founder of Laboratoires Expanscience. His son, Jean-Paul, now heads the company.

    Why remain independent?

    This strategy is simply to ensure that the company's value chain is controlled from A to Z: from research to marketing - which, of course, includes product quality and safety control. Our independence also ensures that we always adopt a continuous improvement approach towards a neutral - and ultimately positive - impact on our environment and the world. Our credo is simple: try to do better every day.
